Dogs and puppies who were living in squalid conditions at a Korean meat farm have been given a new lease on life after being rescued and brought to the United States, reported Wednesday's NBC San Diego News. A total of 30 dogs and puppies were taken from the meat farm through a rescue program of Humane Society International.
According to the San Diego Humane Society, a Special Response Team was able to transport the dogs from San Francisco to San Diego after they made their international trek from South Korea.
On Wednesday, the San Diego Humane Society described the conditions that the dogs were rescued from, "Similar to conditions found in puppy mills and factory farms, the dogs have been living in filthy, cramped cages for their entire lives with very little food or veterinary care. Many suffer from disease and malnutrition and most are subject to daily cruelty."
The rescue dogs include a variety of breeds, including golden retrievers, huskies and Tosas. All of the dogs brought to the United States are under two years of age - some are under six months of age.
According to the shelter, the dogs have already received veterinary exams and they are on hold for a two-week period of time which will allow them time to acclimate to their new environment. Any medical issues that are discovered will be treated during this time and training will be provided to help those dogs who are suffering from shy or anti-social behavior.
