I write, appalled by the indescribably cruel treatment inflicted on Australian sheep in Pakistan, to once again express my horror at Australia's continued participation in the live export trade.
It is now clear that the measures the government put in place to reassure the Australian community that the welfare of exported animals would be protected cannot be relied upon to do so.
We now know that there is no guarantee that shipments of live animals will be accepted and unloaded by importing nations, or that the new regulations will prevent brutal treatment.
I am sickened that profit is used as justification for a trade that puts animals at such constant risk of ill-treatment - and that we are subjected to 'spin' about caring about improving animal welfare in importing countries. Whilst Australia remains willing to send live animals halfway around the world only to be handled and slaughtered in a way unacceptable in our own country - we are responsible for entrenching cruelty rather than inspiring much needed change.
Like many other Australians - at the next Federal election I will not be voting for a party that supports live animal export.
