It all started on January 10th. A ton of gunshots were heard in Suez, and when its citizens woke up, they found bodies of stray dogs - dead and dumped. The ...massacre was ordered by the Governor.

“On January 15, 2013 Dr. Suad Al-Kholi, Director of Veterinary Medicine, announced that the Directorate has organized intensive campaigns against stray animals which resulted in the extermination of 1,757 dogs and 518 cats stray while 3,266 animals had been vaccinated against foot and mouth disease and Rift Valley Fever. In another announcement, the undersecretary of the Veterinary Services in Ismailia, stated that the extermination campaigns will be extended to other cities and regions; that they will use strychnine to poison the animals and / or will kill them with rifles. According to the same announcement, the extermination campaign is organized in the city of Ismailia until January 31, from 15 to 17 of January in the village of Ein twig, and from 19 to 21 January in Balillaah. In Qantara Sharq Center until January 24, and the Department of Abu Sawyer until January 13, Fayed Center until January 29 and Bakasasin from 5 to 31 January and Paltel great until January 30, and West Qantara until 31 January 2013.” (source) Please help end this mass stupidity, cruelty, and ignorance. 20 years of killing stray animals in Egypt. Killing has proven to be ineffective to cut down the numbers of stray animals (killing will only activate the survival genes of the dogs and cats and they will start mating and reproducing at a younger age of six months); the only effective way is to adopt a more humane policy such as TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release).
➨ The Killing Methods !
The Egyptian authorities kill packs and packs of dogs by randomly shooting them, which rarely kill them instantly; instead they are left to bleed for several days until they die in pain and agony or survive with broken bones or paralysis of any of their limbs
The more recent adapted method of killing stray animals is by scattering poisoned meat or bones around the garbage, on the roads, pavements and gardens which are later eaten by the dogs and cats (not only strays, many pets died from eating poisoned food as well !!!). The poison used is Strychnine which put the dogs through violent seizures, rigidity, muscle stiffness, fast heart rate, difficult or slow breathing, then cessation of breathing which eventually leads to death. This poison has dangerous effects on humans as well who may come in contact with the poisoned food as in the case of poor people, street children and garbage collectors.
Other Killing methods adopted by the public are drowning, starving and torturing. Sometimes glass filled food is fed to puppies which cause extreme pain while digesting the food and eventually in most cases leads to death.
Ministry of Agriculture General Organization for Veterinary Services has recently decided to stop the killing of stray dogs and cats and starts to sterilize them instead. Mr. Ayman Farid Abu Hadid Minister of Agriculture assured that this plan will start to take place according to a map where strays are known to be over populated.
Many Massacres have already been held against strays and while this year was expected to be a good one for dogs, cats and animals’ lovers, tens of dogs have been poisoned and killed in the Red Sea Resort Town of Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab Town and just from a couple of days I witnessed myself many dogs poisoned and left dead in Haram Pyramids st.,and Giza !
➨ UPDATE on the killing of stray dogs in Egypt:
In his recent press communique from 28th of February, Ashraf Rabei from the City Council of Mokattam district, confirmed that the authorities have planned to kill stray dogs now systematically each Sunday and Wednesday in their district.
Given that the poison used is too weak to kill big dogs and because there are lots of stray dogs in that district, they will now be shooting them, but they have assured the citizens in their communique “that they won’t hurt anyone”.
Ashraf Rabei pointed also out that, in only 2 weeks, they have already killed 136 dogs in Mokattam district.
Today, March 2, Egyptian animal rights activists held a meeting with Mr. Ashraf Rabei from the City Council of Mokattam, at the City Council office. Not only stray dogs but also wolves and foxes had been killed in Mokattam.
Present at the meeting were: Mr. Ashraf Rabei - Dina Zulfikar - Nancy Zaazaa - Monica - and Ali - as well as groups of civil society of Mokattam, who first raised the case of 3 incidents of bitten citizens.
Dina made inquiries to the city council who claimed that GOVS Cairo said these were rabies infected animals. When Dina asked for a report, they said that they don’t have any report and when discussing with the civil society and the secretary of they city council, they got to know that there were no rabies infected animals!
The vets of GOVS say there is hybrid breeding between dogs and wolves and this is why they poison them all.
Fact is: The Mokattam is a mountain, and foxes and wolves live in some areas of the mountain. Recently, about 3 weeks ago, a new construction company started building compounds which resulted in loss of habitats of the wolves and the foxes…
Dina demands that representatives from the Ministry of Environment be present at the next meeting because foxes and wolves are protected by law.
