Europe’s 23 million dairy cows don’t have adequate laws to protect them. An undercover investigation by Compassion last year revealed the sad reality for so many of these animals. We believe that cows deserve better.
Compassion has joined forces with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and ice-cream makers Ben & Jerry’s to campaign for an EU Dairy Directive. If you’ve not already joined the Supporting Better Dairy campaign, please sign the petition now.

Join thousands of people demanding the first ever law to protect dairy cows in Europe
Too many dairy cows suffer from ill health, poor levels of welfare, and lack of access to pasture. Other farmed animals, such as pigs and chickens, have specific minimum welfare standards set by EU law. So why shouldn’t dairy cows?
We are calling for legislation that ensures:
- Good housing (including access to grazing and the prohibition of tethering)
- Good feeding (a daily diet which meets the cow’s needs)
- Good health (ensuring cows are healthy and do not undergo pain and suffering)
- Appropriate behaviour (cows having the ability to express their natural behaviour)
