**Hunting and poaching:
Hunting and egg collection for consumption are major causes of the drastic decline in marine turtle populations around the world. Green turtles are caught for their meat, eggs and calipee (the green body fat which is the main ingredient in turtle soup).
Researchers estimate that each year poachers take 30,000 green turtles in Baja California and that more than 50,000 marine turtles are killed in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
Olive ridley turtles have been pursued for eggs and their skin used for leather production. In the 1960s, over one million olive ridley turtles were butchered each year on Mexico's Pacific coast. In many countries, juvenile marine turtles are caught, stuffed and sold as curios to tourists. Marine turtle eggs are considered an aphrodisiac in some countries and eaten raw or sold as snacks in bars and restaurants !
Trade !
International trade in products such as tortoiseshell from hawksbill turtles, green turtle calipee and leather from olive ridley turtles has exacerbated the quantity of directed take of marine turtles.
Over the past decades, Japan has emerged as the principal country buying shell (known as Bekko) from tropical countries to produce costly handicrafts. Despite the CITES listing, trade between non-signatory countries and illegal trade persist.

There's tension in far north Queensland between traditional hunting rights and the protection of turtles and dugongs, and it is resulting in some horrific treatment of native animals.
Sea turtles and dugongs subjected to these cruel hunting methods, along with other animals that are traditionally hunted such as kangaroos and goannas, all feel pain, fear and distress regardless of who the perpetrator is. Cultures the world over are now acknowledging that tradition is no excuse for cruelty.

Fair enough if you have to kill turtles because it is your "traditional right" but who cuts the leg of a cow first and let it die in its own blood? No one is going to starve in Australia because we stop the killing of turtles. Australia earns Millions of Dollars with the Tourism Industry - with tourist who come to dive with turtles and in the same country we torture the turtles to death? Species will vanish forever and in the end it does not matter whos fault it was. This is not a question of human races this is a question of respect and ethics towards other creatures.

During Kali Puja, an annual festival in Bangladesh, sacrifices are made to
Kali, goddess of power. It's a time of celebration and feasting and on the
top of the menu is turtle. Many thousands of turtles are slaughtered
indiscriminately each year of which several species are threatened species.
At a market in Dhaka, where most of the slaughters take place, a butcher of
these turtles sells each one for up to $60 depending on the species. Crude
blades are used to hack the turtles away from their shells, scoop their
innards out and saw off limbs. In many cases, the turtles writhe and twitch
in pain because they are still alive. This intense slaughter is in the name
of feeding followers who believe that turtle meat gives them strength and
longevity. Authorities in the region are hesitant to stop the slaughter for
fear of a social uprising where religious tensions are already great. We
speak to festival goers, the traders, buyers and local conservationists.
Culture versus conservation, is there a middle ground?
