Think things are getting better, right? We’re becoming more aware, more enlightened, and our collective consciousness is being raised, yes? I think so. I truly do. I think Steven Pinker was right in The Better Angels of Our Nature. So it is with some reluctance that I offer up a tough pill to swallow. A recent report from the UK—that cradle of civilization that I love!—shows that animal abuse is on the up and up in the land of fish and chips and hardcore animal activism. And it’s rising as punishments get more severe.
Here you go. Pick it apart, tear it up, show me that it’s wrong, because I’m none too thrilled to highlight the fact that “convictions for deliberate acts of cruelty and neglect to small animals, farm animals, horses and donkeys rose by 33.8 percent in England and Wales in 2012.” Or that the RSPCA “says it does not know what is causing the increase in abuse.” Or that the kinds of abuse the RSPCA is reporting is along the lines of beating a puppy to death with a baseball bat and a dog owner who frequently slashed his dog with a knife for fun. Demented shit, in other words.
If you want to join me in taking a dip in the springs of cynicism you might note that the RSPCA is reporting this drastic rise in animal abuse, a rise that it is “struggling to keep up” with, just as it is initiating a fundraiser. You could go there, and why would you not? But I’m not sure the matter is all that simple. I’d like to think better of my species than to accept that we’re taking out our misery on innocent animals. But, looking around, it’s hardly a toughest idea to digest.
