Welcome to your latest update on the difference you are making for farm animals. This month has brought both good news and sad stories...but as ever your response has been overwhelming!

Reactions to Irish pigs film

Thank you so much to the 18,655 people who have already taken action in response to the shocking scenes our undercover investigators discovered on Irish pig farms. You have sent a clear message to the Agriculture Minister, Simon Coveney, that this treatment of pigs is despicable and must stop. Following contact from the Irish Government we have provided them with the details of the farms we filmed – and a spokesman for Simon Coveney is reported as saying they have launched an investigation into our findings.

More than 184,000 signatures for Europe’s pigs

Compassion’s latest EU-wide pig petition has set a new record for us – receiving 184,000 signatures in just four weeks. This quick response has demonstrated how many compassionate citizens want to see full compliance with the EU Pigs Directive. On behalf of Europe’s pigs, thank you…and do keep spreading the word if you can.

Our undercover investigator has also asked me to pass on his gratitude for the response to the personal message he sent a few weeks ago. Thanks to the support of people like you, we can continue the fight to end the illegal cruelty he found on pig farms in Spain, Italy and Ireland. If you haven’t yet made a gift in response to this campaign you can donate here. Thank you.

Live Exports update

Thank you to everyone who turned up to show their support at our public meeting against UK live exports – held, with the RSPCA, in Dover on 7th June. More than 100 people joined us to discuss the next steps in the campaign to end this trade. There were some familiar local faces – those who have campaigned tirelessly against live exports for many years. And we were also thrilled to meet a number of supporters who are new to the campaign.
Meeting in Dover
Save the date – 10th August
Are you concerned and upset that animals are still exported live from the UK? Would you like to help raise awareness of this cruel trade? If you live in, or near, London, please keep Saturday 10th August free for an upcoming event. We’ll let you know the details in a few weeks' time.

Good news for Dutch pigs and hens

On 10th June, representatives of NGOs and pig farmers presented the Dutch government with a plan setting out how the industry will move away from the tail docking of pigs. And, in other good news, the Dutch Agriculture Minister, Sharon Dijksma, has announced that beak trimming for all hens and turkeys will be banned in the Netherlands by September 2018. She also called for an EU-wide ban on this painful practice.
The Netherlands is to be congratulated on both counts – as are the dedicated Compassion in World Farming Netherlands team, who continue to be a powerful voice for Dutch pigs and hens.

Illegal slaughter of animals in Cyprus

Compassion in World Farming's Investigations Unit has recently discovered serious breaches of slaughter regulations in Cyprus. An undercover film of what we found can be seen here. Please note that it contains very disturbing scenes.
This incident made headlines in Cyprus. As a result of our footage, the slaughterhouse was fined and two slaughter men were fired. However, Compassion believes that the problem goes beyond these two men.
A question has been tabled in the Cypriot Parliament about the unacceptable treatment that these animals suffered. We have also written to the Cypriot Minister of Agriculture to ask him how he intends to strengthen the checks carried out in slaughterhouses and implement a stricter penalty system. So far we haven’t had a response. We are now putting in a formal complaint about slaughter in Cyprus to the European Commission.

‘Labelling Matters’ – Fish

We are pleased to report that the European Union has agreed new rules on the labelling of fish. This means consumers will get clearer and more comprehensive information about what they are buying. In particular, it was agreed that each fish product must contain information about how the fish was caught – for example, line caught or trawled.
This great news is another step towards our overall goal of mandatory method of production labelling for all meat and dairy products. Read more about this story and the ‘Labelling Matters’ Campaign here.
Yet again, this has been a packed news update. And, yet again, none of the work Compassion does would be possible without your support. Thank you.
