We
did it! Thanks to the generous support of thousands of caring PETA
donors, we reached our Rs 10 lakhs campaign goal for "Cut It Out" –
PETA's Animal Test Challenge. All donations have been matched
by a dedicated PETA supporter, so we now have Rs 20 lakhs to benefit our
work to help end deadly and painful experiments on animals, promote the
development and adoption of innovative new non-animal test methods, and
win significant victories that will keep animals out of laboratory
cages.
Here's
a great example of what can be accomplished for animals when
compassionate people work together. After a tremendous outcry from kind
people around the world, a hideous blood farm in Texas, United States,
that was recently exposed by PETA US is closing and transferring the
scores of greyhounds it holds captive into adoption programmes. At last,
these long-abused dogs can get the care that they deserve as well as
the opportunity to play, sleep soundly on a sofa, and go for walks.
Many
of the dogs at that facility had been "retired" from the racing
industry only to face a new kind of misery. Treated as little more than
living blood bags, they were denied even basic veterinary care, despite
suffering from serious dental conditions, ghastly infections, and open
wounds. Despondent and lonely, they were often seen spinning in circles –
a sign of severe distress – or hiding in the old chemical tanks that
served as their only shelter.
PETA
US campaigned determinedly to demand a better life for these
greyhounds, including by staging demonstrations, setting up mobile
billboards, and enlisting the support of Paul McCartney, who spoke out
publicly against the horrors at the blood farm.
While
the nightmare may now be over for these greyhounds, dogs aren't the
only ones exploited for their blood. In India, workers at poorly
regulated facilities routinely harvest huge volumes of blood from
horses, donkeys, and mules to produce antitoxins and antivenins. A
series of inspections by veterinarians and other experts – including
from PETA – have revealed that many of these animals suffer from
anaemia, untreated wounds, diseased hooves, malnourishment, and other
painful and debilitating conditions.
Before
we exposed this abuse, few knew that horses, donkeys, and mules were
kept in such deplorable conditions for this purpose. PETA is working
hard to shut down the facilities and give the animals there the relief
that those greyhounds in Texas are set to enjoy.
