Cows and calves abused in the leather trade endure enormous suffering.
Idabelle
was a real individual: She was intelligent, had close friends, and may
even have held grudges against those who had wronged her or her beloved
family members. She should have spent her days peacefully grazing with a
calf by her side…
But in the violent leather trade, Idabelle's calves were torn away from her to be skinned.
And her own life was to be cut short, too. Although she could have
lived to be 20 years old, she was repeatedly artificially inseminated
(raped) and gave birth to calves—who were torn away from her to be
killed for soft leather gloves and other goods—and every drop of milk
that could be taken from her was sold. The plan was to kill and skin her
when her body had worn out—likely by the age of 5—from cycles of forced
breeding and being treated like a milk machine. But that didn't happen.
She escaped from the boat taking her and a herd of other cows from the
state of Virginia to South America.
She
jumped the rail, even though she was heavily pregnant, and swam to an
island. The boat couldn't wait and moved on. PETA U.S. adopted her, and
she and her beloved calf, Jimmy, lived out their lives on a vegan farm.
Others
couldn't be saved, because the demand for leather, milk, and cheese is
still too great. So they met their awful fate. And so it is: Behind
every glove, garment, shoe, belt, purse, and furniture covering made of
leather, fur, or wool is a story of tremendous suffering, and PETA is
working hard, determined to stop as much of that misery as we possibly
can.
