A dog abandoned because its former owner believed it was gay has been saved from a kill shelter just hours before being euthanized.
The dog in question, a 50-pound “scared-of-everything” American bulldog mix, was abandoned at Jackson Tennessee Euthanasia. The shelter, as it does with all its animals, immediately put up a profile for the bulldog on its Facebook page, explaining:
This guy was signed over to RC, not [because] he’s mean or [because] he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay!
According to the shelter, the dog’s former owner found the dog “hunched” over another male dog. Being the spiffing human being that he is, the owner decided he couldn’t tolerate having a homosexual animal and promptly dumped the poor dog with Jackson TN Euthanasia.
While there are over a thousand species in which same-sex pairing has been documented, and many more likely to be found in the future, the behavior of mounting another animal in the manner described is actually common among animals in general, not out of sexual preference but rather as a show of dominance. That this man chose to so cavalierly discard and endanger the life of his canine companion is, therefore, capricious and ignorant in the extreme.
As the hours ticked by and the shelter prepared to put the dog to sleep, the dog’s story quickly went viral over the Internet. Indeed, at the time of reporting, the shelter’s original post alone has been shared over 5,100 times, this not to mention the separate reports made by news sites across the world.
However, moves were already afoot to rescue the dog, says his new caretaker Stephanie Fryns, a veterinary technician from Jackson who is naming the dog Elton.
Reports ABC:
Fryns, who owns four dogs, told ABCNews.com that she saw Elton on an adoption website and had made plans to rescue him even before his story went viral.
Fryns said the pooch weighed 50 pounds, and “was pretty friendly so far. He’s pretty scared of everything, which is understandable. But he loved the car ride.”
Fryns took time to note that, due to illicit dog fighting (in addition to a prejudice against the breed), bulldogs and bulldog mix breeds are ones that are frequently abandoned, but the rest often do not have the benefit of a media-enticing story that will save them from euthanasia.

Care2 Success: Finally, a big thank you goes to Care2 member Dianne Lynn Elko whose petition to save the newly christened Elton received 4,168 signatures and was shared over 6,000 times on Facebook; and to all those who signed, thank you for making a difference and ensuring Elton found what will hopefully be his forever home.
