Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Ireland set to defy the sow stall ban
Currently millions of Europe’s pigs spend their entire pregnancies (nearly four months, usually more than twice per year) in the restrictive and prison-like conditions of a sow stall.
Thankfully, an EU wide ban on using these stalls after the first four weeks of pregnancy will come into effect on the 1st January 2013. This is a remarkable step forward for animal welfare and will result in millions of pigs living better lives.
Yet, appallingly, we have just found out that four new nations – Germany, Ireland, Belgium and Denmark – will not be ready on time for the ban, even though they have had since 2001 to prepare. That is 11 years!
Today, please join with us in sending a strong final warning message to the responsible ministers in these four member states. We need your help to tell them that they must make immediate plans so they can comply with this vital ban on time and in full.
