Walmart likes to tout its low prices, but the true cost of its cheap pork is blatant animal abuse.
New video footage secretly recorded by a Mercy For Animals investigator at a Pipestone System factory farm—a Walmart pork supplier—reveals the systematic torture of mother pigs and their piglets. This is the third time MFA has uncovered unconscionable animal cruelty at a factory farm supplying pork to Walmart.
MFA’s hidden-camera video exposes the following horrific abuses:
  • Thousands of mother pigs confined to filthy, metal gestation crates so small they are unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably for nearly their entire lives
  • Workers beating, throwing, slapping, hitting and screaming obscenities at pigs
  • Workers slamming piglets into the ground and leaving them to suffer and slowly die
  • Workers ripping out the testicles and slicing off the tails of fully conscious piglets without the use of any painkillers
Randy Spronk, president of the National Pork Producers Council, owns the factory farm MFA investigated. If such appalling cruelty runs rampant at a facility owned by the pork industry’s leading figure, one can only imagine the horrors occurring behind the doors of other factory farms across the country.
Based on evidence gathered by MFA, local law enforcement has raided the factory farm and launched a criminal investigation into animal cruelty. The case is ongoing.
“The suffering experienced by the animals is gratuitous, unnecessary, abusive, and counterproductive,” world-renowned animal welfare expert Dr. Bernard Rollin said after viewing the footage. “[The use of gestation crates is] arguably the worst practice in confinement agriculture.”
Gestation crates are indeed considered so cruel they have been banned in nine U.S. states, as well as in the entire European Union. In the last year, Costco, Kmart, Safeway, McDonald’s, Burger King and virtually all other grocers and fast-food chains have committed to phasing out gestation crates from their pork supply chains. Even Walmart in Canada has required its suppliers to phase out these inherently cruel cages.
But not Walmart in the United States.

Walmart continues to support this blatant animal abuse by selling pork from suppliers who confine pigs in tiny crates.
Please join MFA as we call on Walmart to immediately adopt new animal welfare guidelines prohibiting its pork suppliers from confining pigs in crates so small they cannot even turn around.
And remember, the best way to help pigs and other farmed animals is simply to stop eating them and adopt a healthy vegan diet.
