Monday afternoon, after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen,
police officers in Tampa, Florida, arrived to a dumpster on North 10th
Street where they found a mother dog trying to pull her newborn puppy,
who was in a plastic bag, from the trash bin, reported Fox 5 News.
Thankfully, the tiny pup who had been thrown away was rescued in time and despite the cruel incident, he is expected to survive. Officers found more puppies beneath a nearby shed and it is unclear at this point in time if someone threw only the one pup in the trash, or if all had been tossed in the dumpster and the mother dog was successful in retrieving the other puppies. Tampa Police Spokeswoman Andrea Davis told Fox 5, "Either way, it looks like someone threw away at least one puppy and mom dog was in the garbage can trying to get that puppy out."
On Monday, the Tampa Police Department posted several photos of the puppies and their mom, to the department's Facebook page, along with a comment, "TPD Sgt Simonson, MPO Barrett, Ofc Whitney, along with Hillsborough Animal Safety Ofc Lewis rescued mom and pups from the garbage. An investigation is ongoing."
The puppies were transported to Hillsborough County Animal Services to be cared for - when they are old enough to be adopted out, the shelter will likely seek new homes for them.
