When I saw this video, I cried. Apparently I’m not the only one; every other comment I’ve seen from viewers expresses the same reaction. In the video, a toddler in Brazil explains to his mother why he will not eat his octopus pasta. Originally uploaded to YouTube on May 15, 2013, within 2 weeks the video of little Luiz Antonio had over 1 million views; but it could only be understood by those who knew Portuguese. So when Raffaella Ciavatta, a Brazilian-born vegan activist and certified translator living in NY, saw the video, she knew she had seen something extraordinary, and contacted the mother to ask for permission to translate it into English.
Within two days of her uploaded translation, the English-subtitled version has more than 700,000 views. I asked Raffaella if she was surprised by the impact of the video and she said she was happy, but not surprised. “Luiz is a very special child but I think he expresses something all children feel: they love animals and don’t want to hurt them. It’s very powerful to hear this pure little child saying something we all know in our hearts: that we should take care of animals, not kill them.”
Raffaella said she felt a moral obligation to translate the video because she knew it would give many people hope, and cause many others to reconsider their decision to eat animals. And she’s right: comments are pouring in on youtube and facebook by the thousands. One man writes: “Thank you so much for sharing this…it made me cry. I’ve been in a battle with myself over what the right thing to do is, and I’ve been searching the whole internet to help me make an intelligent decision. It turns out that the intelligence I was so desperately trying to find came from this child, and it was more powerful than anything I could have read on the subject. It has changed me.”
Speaking about Luiz, Raffaella says,”It just goes to show that one person really can impact millions.” The same can be said for Raffaella Ciavatta, who is now working on Italian, French and Spanish translations of the video. What began as a conversation between one little boy and his mother is now a powerful reminder to people the world over— compassion toward all animals doesn’t have to be taught. It is only untaught.
