Barn Update
This month our cow Vegan turns 10! Please join us to sing him happy birthday and give him a treat this Sunday at 12:30. If you would like to bring him a treat, he loves oatmeal and peppermint cookies.
Vegan was born blind on a beef ranch. The farmer’s wife felt sorry for him and brought him up to the house to bottle-feed him, and soon fell in love with him. The farmer didn’t believe in cows as pets so he gave his wife one week to get rid of him before he did. She begged us to take him and of course we said yes. We took him when he was 8 weeks old and bottle-fed him for a year. When Vegan was a year and a half, we found a special surgeon in San Diego who did eye surgery on his congenital cataracts and he could see. We later found out that the farmer’s wife became a vegetarian and left her husband. She saved Vegan’s life, but it turns out that he changed hers as well!Because cows are genetically engineered to get very big, very fast so they can be killed when they are still babies, Vegan is now over 2,000 pounds. It is becoming difficult for him to get up and down, and he moves slow but we are doing everything possible to keep him comfortable for as long as we can. Thanks for helping us love him and making him feel special.
