UNE VICTOIRE POUR LES DINDES DU CANADA

We did it! Thanks to a Mercy For Animals Canada undercover investigation, eleven counts of animal cruelty have been filed against Hybrid Turkeys — the country’s largest turkey-breeding factory farm — as well as five employees. This is the first time in Canadian history that an investigation by an animal rights group has resulted in cruelty charges.

When we went undercover at Hybrid Turkeys, we documented horrific and systematic animal abuse, including:
  • Workers punching, throwing, kicking, and beating turkeys
  • Workers crushing the spines of turkeys, and bashing in their heads with metal rods and shovels
  • Turkeys with open, pus-filled wounds, rotting eyes, and festering infections, left to suffer without proper veterinary care
  • Birds bred to grow so rapidly that they became crippled under their own weight
After reviewing the evidence collected by Mercy For Animals Canada, Ontario law enforcement filed charges in the Ontario Court of Justice.
This is a historic day for farmed animals in Canada!
Earlier this year, Hybrid Turkeys claimed that the cruelty documented during our investigation was “isolated”; however, whistleblowers stepped forward and described systematic cruelty and abuse at numerous Hybrid locations. It is now time for the abuse and deception to end. Today’s charges bring us one step closer to protection for turkeys.
While this victory for turkeys should be celebrated, there is a long road ahead in the pursuit of justice for farmed animals. Our legal team works tirelessly within the justice system to fight abuse.
