Tamara Tarnawska, la pasionaria de la cause animale en Ukraine, lance un véritable cri d’alarme. «Depuis l’Eurofoot de 2012, rien n’a changé. Des chiens errants sont toujours empoisonnés par les services de la ville appartenant à la mairie de Kiev, elle-même dépendante du pouvoir en place. Nous avons besoin de l’aide des pays européens.»
Manque de moyens
Aujourd’hui, alors que l’Ukraine a rompu ses négociations avec l’UE, Tamara Tarnawska craint le pire. «Ce pays s’éloigne de la démocratie. Pour ses dirigeants, les êtres humains comptent peu. Et les animaux encore moins.»
Pour améliorer le sort des chiens, elle est prête à tout. Seulement voilà, Tamara Tarnawska en possède près de 1500, sans oublier quelque 250 chats. «Pour la plupart, ce sont des animaux abandonnés, parfois blessés et même handicapés dont personne ne veut», souligne la présidente de SOS Animals, sa fondation. Quand on lui parle des chiens adoptés dans les pays pauvres par des personnes bien intentionnées, comme Lolita Morena, et qui sont placés en Suisse, son sang ne fait qu’un tour. «Ce n’est pas une solution. Il faut absolument aider les animaux en difficulté chez eux. Les Européens doivent se mobiliser pour que les refuges fonctionnent correctement dans leur pays. Avec l’argent du voyage d’un chien en Europe, je peux en nourrir et soigner ici plusieurs dizaines. Et je manque terriblement de moyens!»
Son refuge, implanté dans la banlieue peu habitée de la capitale, permet à ses toutous de toute taille de se balader librement, quand leur état de santé le permet. «Résultat, ils reviennent pour manger, ils sont heureux», ajoute le petit bout de femme. C’est vrai. Quand nous avons croisé des molosses dans l’allée du refuge, bordée d’enclos destinés aux bêtes convalescentes ou traumatisées, nous n’avons constaté aucune agressivité, même si certains d’entre eux savaient donner de la voix.
«Notre refuge n’a pas les standards européens, faute de moyens. Nos animaux sont peut-être un peu plus sales, mais ils disposent de beaucoup de place. Ils sont souvent bien moins stressés que leurs congénères européens, confinés dans des espaces exigus.»
Le soutien de Clinton
Ses relations haut placées, son parcours dans les sphères internationales lui ont valu des torrents d’éloges et des soutiens aussi divers que ceux de Bill Clinton, d’Ioulia Timochenko, ex-premier ministre actuellement en prison, ou, plus précisément pour ses activités à la présidence de SOS Animals, Edouard Stavitsky, ministre de l’Energie. Mais cela n’a pas suffi pour améliorer ses relations avec la mairie de Kiev, dépendante de Viktor Ianoukovytch, actuel président prorusse de l’Ukraine, qui ne lui pardonne pas une opération menée avec une caméra cachée. «Nous avons pu filmer des chiens tués à coups de marteau sur la tête par les services de la ville.»
Parmi ses supporters les plus fidèles figure en tête de liste le Parti européen d’Ukraine (lire encadré), plutôt libéral. Même le leader d’extrême droite Ruslan Koshulynskyi, président du Parlement, rencontré lors de la fête organisée à Kiev pour les 20 ans de SOS Animals, ne tarit pas d’éloges sur elle: «Tamara a su mobiliser des énergies autour d’elle, elle force l’admiration par sa lutte, sa détermination et son engagement dans notre pays.» Tamara Tarnawska ne se contente pas d’être une âme sensible à la cause animale. Elle est aussi devenue au fil du temps un symbole de l’opposition avec qui il faut compter.

Le travail de THR s'appuie sur des témoignages du personnel de la AHA, une demi-douzaine de personnes ayant préféré garder l'anonymat. A intervalles réguliers, le journal confronte le discours officiel ("tout va bien", "on fait notre travail au mieux"...) avec ces témoignages ("c'est de pire en pire", "les animaux ne sont pas bien défendus"...). Parmi les nombreux exemples cités, on trouve le cas de King, le tigre du Bengale utilisé dans L'Odyssée de Pi. L'animal a manqué se noyer au cours du tournage. "Son dresseur a dû l'extraire du bassin à l'aide d'une corde", écrit THR. Pourtant, nulle mention de cet événement nulle part, et pour cause. Une membre de l'association, qui en parle dans un mail adressé à un collègue en avril 2011, a fait en sorte que l'incident reste caché. "NE LE DIS A PERSONNE", lui demande-t-elle.

Les cas similaires recensés ces dernières années sont nombreux. Sur le tournage du Hobbit : un voyage inattendu, de Peter Jackson, une trentaine de chèvres et de moutons sont morts de soif et de fatigue. Pour There Will Be Blood, de Paul Thomas Anderson, "plusieurs chevaux sont morts", notamment de colique, une maladie dont ces animaux peuvent être atteints quand ils sont déshydratés ou mal nourris. Un autre cheval a péri en marge du tournage de War Horse, de Steven Spielberg. Une vache est morte sur le plateau de Temple Grandin, produit par HBO. Une girafe, en plein shooting de Zookeeper, de Frank Coraci. Et au rayon "animaux tromignons", l'hebdomadaire signale la mort d'un "chipmunk" (un écureuil) en plein tournage de Playboys à saisir. Sans parler des poissons tués pendant les explosions sous-marines de Pirates des Caraïbes - La Malédiction du Black Pearl et des milliers de vers et d'insectes régulièrement occis, plus ou moins délibérément.
Une minimisation de la souffrance animale
Malgré ces accidents mortels, et d'autres non létaux mais souvent sérieux, la plupart de ces films ont reçu le label "Aucun animal n'a été maltraité durant le tournage". Pourquoi une telle tolérance ? La AHA avance tantôt que les animaux ont été blessés au cours du transport, donc en dehors du "circuit", tantôt qu'ils sont morts de vieillesse ou de causes "non alarmantes". A d'autres moments, elle assure que les blessures n'ont pas de lien direct avec l'activité de l'animal et que la production ne peut donc endosser la responsabilité de la maltraitance. Un dresseur frappe violemment un chien jouant dans Antartica, prisonniers du froid ? "Je n'avais pas d'autre choix, il s'était battu avec d'autres chiens", explique-t-il. Conclusions de l'association : "Aucun chien n'a été blessé."

In a landmark victory for seals, the World Trade Organization ruled on Monday to uphold the European Union’s (EU) ban on imported seal products over ethical concerns.
In 2010, the EU enacted a ban on seal products, with exceptions for Inuit and other indigenous communities and for products that were derived for non-commercial purposes as a result of managing marine resources. The move was challenged by Canada and Norway, which both argued that the embargo violated global trade rules and that the hunts are humane and sustainable, despite evidence to the contrary.
The WTO pointed out inconsistencies and problems with trade agreements, but ruled in the end that the ban was valid because it fills “the objective of addressing EU public moral concerns on seal welfare to a certain extent, and no alternative measure was demonstrated to make an equivalent or greater contribution to the fulfillment of the objective.”
Conservationists and animal advocacy groups are celebrating the victory, not only because it’s a big one for seals, but because it’s a big one for global animal welfare issues in general. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), which has been campaigning against the hunt for decades, noted that the WTO’s recognition of our right to oppose products that we believe are cruel and unsustainable is cause for celebration.
“The report from WTO panel is a victory for seals, animal welfare and Europeans,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, IFAW EU Regional Director. “EU leaders can be proud that they have simultaneously protected seals, represented the needs of their citizens and respected EU obligations under the WTO – that is not a simple task.”
According to the European Commission, an estimated 900,000 seals are slaughtered around the world every year. Canada’s hunt alone is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on earth. It’s been extensively watched by animal advocates, and the cruelty inherent in this bloody business has been well documented.
Despite opposition in Canada, the hunt continues and is largely subsidized by the government, which hands out millions of taxpayer dollars to prop this industry up. Canada relies on exports to keep going, but the global market is disappearing with product bans already in place in the U.S., Mexico, Russia and Taiwan. The search for new markets has also failed, as the value of seal pelts has seen a downward spiral in recent years.
Canada and the EU have 60 days to appeal the ruling. According to Reuters, Canada plans to appeal and believes public opposition to its seal trade is based on “myths and misinformation.” Hopefully Canada will reconsider and stop wasting time and money trying to keep this dying industry going and will instead focus its efforts on ways to help sealers into different jobs.

A total of 333 rhinos were illegally killed in South Africa in 2010, including ten critically endangered black rhinos, according to national park officials. Namibia is planning to hold an auction to raise money for the conservation of rhinos in their country. But what they’re planning to auction is a legal hunting permit for a black rhino – the scarcer of the two already vulnerable animals. According to a report on Tourism Update, the auction will be hosted by the Dallas Safari Club during its annual convention and expo in January. The hunt will take place at Mangetti National Park, in northern Namibia.
As cruel as this sounds, the auction is set to raise a considerable amount of money that will go directly toward conserving rhinos in Namibia. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has granted Namibia an annual export quota of up to five hunter-taken black rhinos. This means that the hunting of five black rhinos per year is entirely legal in Namibia.
“This fundraiser is the first of its kind for an endangered species,” said Dallas Safari Club Executive Director, Ben Carter. “It’s going to generate a sum of money large enough to be enormously meaningful in Namibia’s fight to ensure the future of its Black rhino populations.”
✦There are currently only 4 848 black rhinos left in Africa and the western black rhino was declared extinct in June this year. Closer to home, figures are looking increasingly dire with 790 rhinos already poached during this year (up until 25 October 2013). During the entire duration of 2012, 668 rhinos were poached in South Africa. This, according to the Department of Environmental Affairs, published on Stop Rhino Poaching. 259 arrests have already been made this year.
As the situation is getting increasingly desperate, governments are trying anything and everything to curb poaching. Earlier this year there was talk about South Africa legalising trade in rhino horn. Other possible solutions have also included a chemical composition that will affect the health of those who consume rhino horn. ✦✦Animals Used In Chinese Medicines✦✦
36 different species of animal are used in traditional Chinese medicines, including the endangered species the tiger, the rhinoceros, and the sea horse.
Worryingly, according to the World Health Organisation, nearly 80% of the world's population relies on traditional medicines. This is despite traditional medicines having no scientific evidence to prove their claims and having no real medical value.
Chinese medicine is the most widely practiced traditional medicine, although there are other traditional medicines used in other cultures world wide which also involve animal cruelty.
Rhino Poaching
Rhinoceros horns are used in Chinese medicines because of the belief that they treat fever, convulsions, and delirium.
The Rhinoceros is an endangered species. Heightened demand from traditional Chinese medicine consumers across Asia means their horns are worth nearly twice as much as gold.
In fact, a Rhino's horn is worth more than the actual Rhino would weigh in gold! This means that Rhinoceros poaching is common wherever in the world the Rhinos can be found.
They are not even safe in animal parks and sanctuaries.
The poaching of Rhino's for their horns leaves many young Rhino's orphaned, too young to fend for themselves.
Officials in the countries trusted to protect their Rhinos are often corrupt and complicit in the killings. Much of the illegal hunting is undertaken by organised crime gangs.
The violence poachers use towards Rhino's is brutal. Many Rhino's are killed using one of a number of merciless methods before their horn is removed. In other cases, the Rhino is still alive, and in incredible pain, after the horn has been dug out of it's face.
Rhinos have often been seen writhing around in pain due to the agony being so unbearable. Many of the Rhinos who survive the agonizing experience, then sadly die, or have to be put out of their misery.
Those who do not die due to the poachers attack, cannot defend themselves against other animals without their horn.
In the last 100 years, the Rhino population has decreased by 95%. Sadly, it is now thought that the Rhinos only hope of surviving at all is in captive breeding.
✦The demand for rhino horn comes predominantly from Asia where it is used as a traditional Chinese medicine that supposedly cures cancer, hangovers, and is used as an aphrodisiac

✦In 2008 83 rhinos were killed. This year in 2013 an estimated 1000 rhinos will be killed.

✦Despite the good intentions of saving a rhino from being poached by removing its horn, the rhino is often killed anyway. Poachers do this to prevent having to track the rhino again in the future.
✦Many poachers have bad shots and use old ammunition, which means that the rhinos do not die right away and are alive when their horns are brutally hacked off with pangas and axes.
✦People on the demand-side believe that the serum secreted from the base of the horn has increased potency and powers. Therefore, many poachers will hack the the entire face off of the rhino while the animal is still alive to ensure that they get the entire horn as well as this serum as it is worth more.
✦Many farms are removing their rhinos horns as a safety precaution. While this does help a bit, the chunk of horn left in the rhinos head is still valuable and poachers will kill the rhino even for this small amount.
✦Poaching takes place across boundaries.
►No organization or governmental body keeps a central database of statistics relevant to the region.
►Flourishing illegal wild animals markets in SA is compounded by geographical location and relatively sophisticated infrastructure.
►Poaching is taking place in an increasingly organized scale. Money is the driving force behind the trade; motivated by greed and aided by corruption, also inadequate ranger staffing, public and state attitudes to wildlife, lack of public awareness, lack of data, and lack of adequate law enforcement.

✦✦Animals Used In Chinese Medicines✦✦
36 different species of animal are used in traditional Chinese medicines, including the endangered species the tiger, the rhinoceros, and the sea horse.
Worryingly, according to the World Health Organisation, nearly 80% of the world's population relies on traditional medicines. This is despite traditional medicines having no scientific evidence to prove their claims and having no real medical value.
Chinese medicine is the most widely practiced traditional medicine, although there are other traditional medicines used in other cultures world wide which also involve animal cruelty.
Rhino Poaching
Rhinoceros horns are used in Chinese medicines because of the belief that they treat fever, convulsions, and delirium.
The Rhinoceros is an endangered species. Heightened demand from traditional Chinese medicine consumers across Asia means their horns are worth nearly twice as much as gold.
In fact, a Rhino's horn is worth more than the actual Rhino would weigh in gold! This means that Rhinoceros poaching is common wherever in the world the Rhinos can be found.
They are not even safe in animal parks and sanctuaries.
The poaching of Rhino's for their horns leaves many young Rhino's orphaned, too young to fend for themselves.
Officials in the countries trusted to protect their Rhinos are often corrupt and complicit in the killings. Much of the illegal hunting is undertaken by organised crime gangs.
The violence poachers use towards Rhino's is brutal. Many Rhino's are killed using one of a number of merciless methods before their horn is removed. In other cases, the Rhino is still alive, and in incredible pain, after the horn has been dug out of it's face.
Rhinos have often been seen writhing around in pain due to the agony being so unbearable. Many of the Rhinos who survive the agonizing experience, then sadly die, or have to be put out of their misery.
Those who do not die due to the poachers attack, cannot defend themselves against other animals without their horn.
In the last 100 years, the Rhino population has decreased by 95%. Sadly, it is now thought that the Rhinos only hope of surviving at all is in captive breeding.

✦Despite the good intentions of saving a rhino from being poached by removing its horn, the rhino is often killed anyway. Poachers do this to prevent having to track the rhino again in the future.
✦Many poachers have bad shots and use old ammunition, which means that the rhinos do not die right away and are alive when their horns are brutally hacked off with pangas and axes.
✦People on the demand-side believe that the serum secreted from the base of the horn has increased potency and powers. Therefore, many poachers will hack the the entire face off of the rhino while the animal is still alive to ensure that they get the entire horn as well as this serum as it is worth more.
✦Many farms are removing their rhinos horns as a safety precaution. While this does help a bit, the chunk of horn left in the rhinos head is still valuable and poachers will kill the rhino even for this small amount.
✦Poaching takes place across boundaries.
►No organization or governmental body keeps a central database of statistics relevant to the region.
►Flourishing illegal wild animals markets in SA is compounded by geographical location and relatively sophisticated infrastructure.
►Poaching is taking place in an increasingly organized scale. Money is the driving force behind the trade; motivated by greed and aided by corruption, also inadequate ranger staffing, public and state attitudes to wildlife, lack of public awareness, lack of data, and lack of adequate law enforcement.
✦The media only reports rhino deaths from poaching, but many rhinos are killed and injured due to collateral damage over and above this. Fore example fatal aggression is increasing in male rhinos due to stress.

✦✦Rhinos are gentle. They are curious when we stop nearby to observe them. They are protective of their calves, who need to nurse for 16 months. They communicate with each other. They are not so unlike us.
Humans are rhinos’ only predators because they have horns, made of keratin, like our fingernails. Horns that some people believe have medicinal properties – properties that are unproven. So people brutally kill them, even young rhinos, for just a nub of horn.
The rhino population has reached a devastating low due to the rise in illegal rhino horn poaching. In 2008, 83 rhinos were killed. This year in 2013 an estimated 1,000 rhinos will be killed. The situation is desperate...please spread this link with the petition widely !

At a hog farm in Oklahoma, pigs were being tortured. There’s no other word for it.
A Mercy for Animals investigator spent three weeks undercover at West Coast Farm in Okfuskee County, Okla., from mid-September to mid-October 2013. The brutality he documented during this brief period is appalling and heart wrenching.
An undercover camera caught the following during a period of less than one month:

For those who believe this kind of abuse must be limited to only a handful of facilities, think again. Mercy for Animals founder Nathan Runkle recently told Harper’s Magazine: ”We have never found a facility where there wasn’t abuse. Finding it is not the issue. Our challenge is just to have a camera there when it happens.”

The factory farm industry despises the public furor caused each time videos like this one go viral. Inevitably, revealing the horrors faced by factory farmed animals costs them money and customers. Almost certainly, with every such video, many people finally decide it’s time to stop eating meat and dairy entirely. Many more boycott the companies in question.
It’s not hard to understand, therefore, why Big Agriculture is so driven and single-minded in its support of state “ag gag” laws. Such laws make it a crime to reveal animal abuses by secretly investigating farmed animal facilities and documenting their practices.
Imagine that — in so many places it’s not a crime to abuse farmed animals but it’s a crime to secretly (or even overtly) videotape or photograph it. Whistleblowers are usually protected, not prosecuted. How did America’s values become so irretrievably skewed?
To have a hope of righting these wrongs, the public must be able to see what’s going on. “Ag gag” laws keep you from knowing what factory farms want to keep well hidden.
These Abuses “Violate Every Principle of Humane Animal Handling”
The pork industry is rushing to distance itself from this incident. The National Pork Producers Council issued a statement in which it said, “NPPC and America’s hog farmers do not condone and, in fact, strongly condemn practices that are not in accord with U.S. pork industry best practices.”
A panel convened by the Center for Food Integrity (CFI) reviews animal abuse allegations like the ones in this video. The panelists reviewed the Mercy for Animals footage and agreed that abuse unquestionably occurred.
“These behaviors violate every principle of humane animal handling and go against everything the swine industry advocates for providing decent quality care for animals,” according to CFI panel member Dr. Candace Croney of Purdue University. See a number of additional expert opinions gathered by Mercy for Animals here.
“There’s abuse and egregious misbehavior by employees in their handling of the animals in this video,” said panel member Dr. John Deen of the University of Minnesota. “What is especially concerning is that it appears to be a culture rather than being able to attribute the behavior to individuals.”
What’s a little saddening is that Deen also said this: “[T]his video also shows common and acceptable production practices that are not pleasant to see but there are valid reasons for using them on the farm.”
This is, perhaps, a reference to the gestation crates in the video. Gestation crates are those incredibly confined spaces in which female pigs spend most, if not all of their lives, churning out piglets so America can satisfy its mania for bacon. In human terms, it’s like living in an airplane seat or a phone booth — for your whole life.

Une initiative courageuse saluée par la LPO et qui pourrait bien servir d'exemple à de nombreuses autres communes en vue des municipales de 2014.

Récemment, il a reçu la visite de François Darlot, président du RAC (rassemblement pour l'abolition de la chasse) et d'Aline Maatouk Renard pour la FBB (Fondation Brigitte Bardot). Cette rencontre portait sur la question du renouvellement des baux de chasse. En effet la commune doit renouveler le 31 décembre 2013 pour 9 ans, près de 1000 ha de baux de chasse sur la zone la plus chassée de la commune, territoire connu d'une population conséquente de sangliers entretenue par la société de chasse locale. Raymond Maire est fermement décidé à imposer aux chasseurs de laisser le dimanche sans chasse. Cette décision a fait l'objet d'une délibération du conseil municipal qui a entériné la proposition.
Monsieur Maire tient à ce que cette décision fasse l'objet d'un débat public, ce qui sera fait dans le courant de l'année 2014. Selon François Darlot « Cette démarche volontaire courageuse et déterminée pourrait représenter un point de départ important par son caractère exemplaire. Ainsi comme Monsieur Maire l'espère lui-même, cette position pourrait être reprise par d'autres municipalités. Nous allons réfléchir aux moyens de pouvoir exploiter et valoriser cette initiative afin de la présenter comme un exemple à suivre à l'ensemble des maires de France ». Une initiative utile et courageuse que n'a pas manqué de saluer Allain Bougrain Dubourg, président de la LPO.

"Bruxelles, le 22 novembre 2013 – La députation de la province de Flandre Orientale a décidé hier d'accorder un permis pour l'élargissement d'un élevage de visons existant à Beveren. Une décision qui fait pourtant suite aux réclamations introduites par GAIA et par plusieurs habitants de Beveren contre cette demande.
Les députés provinciaux n'ont visiblement tenu aucun compte des nombreuses réclamations amenées par GAIA. Suite à cet élargissement, le nombre de visons détenus dans cet élevage passerait de 16 200 à 27 000.
Un débat est en cours au Parlement fédéral sur une possible interdiction de l'élevage d'animaux pour la fourrure dans notre pays. Plusieurs partis politiques ont introduit des propositions de loi allant dans ce sens.
GAIA a d'ores et déjà pris contact avec son avocat concernant la suite du dossier, et envisage d'introduire un recours auprès de la Ministre flamande de l'Environnement contre la décision de la province.
