Dans un article publié le 3 février 2015 dans The Guardian, Peter Singer, auteur de La libération animale, fait le point 40 ans après la publication de son ouvrage majeur. Il réagit notamment à la diffusion d'une vidéo faite par Animal Aid, une association militante, filmée en Angleterre dans un abattoir où il a été constaté des actes de cruauté sur des animaux. Pour Peter Singer, tant que nous continuerons à consommer de la viande, ces actes de maltraitance demeureront inévitables. Voici la traduction de cet article par Kévin Barralon. Merci à lui.
Lorsque j’ai publié La Libération animale, j’espérais que 40 ans plus tard, il n’y aurait plus d’abattoirs — et qu’il n’y aurait plus, également, d’histoires dans les journaux au sujet d’atrocités comme celle d’un abattoir dans le nord de l’Angleterre. Les arguments contre l’oppression que nous exerçons sur les animaux me semblaient si évidents et irréfutables qu’il était certain qu’un puissant mouvement allait émerger, reléguant ces abus dans l’histoire, à l'instar du mouvement anti-esclavagiste qui a mis fin à la traite des noirs.
Du moins, c’est ce que j’imaginais dans mes moments les plus optimistes (ou naïfs). Dans mes moments les plus pessimistes (ou réalistes), j’ai compris l’immensité de la tâche qui consiste à changer des habitudes aussi profondément enracinées que manger de la viande et transformer des points de vue aussi prépondérants que le spécisme. Plus de 200 ans après l’abolition de l’esclavage, le racisme est toujours là. Et même l’esclavage, alors qu’il est partout illégal, existe toujours. Comment ai-je pu m’imaginer que mettre fin au spécisme et à l’esclavage des animaux serait plus facile que mettre fin au racisme et à l’esclavage d'êtres humains ?
Dans le contexte de ces hypothèses les plus réalistes, nous pouvons déplorer le fait que les animaux soient toujours maltraités à grande échelle. Mais il ne faut pas désespérer. Dans de nombreuses régions du monde, y compris en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, il y a eu d’énormes progrès vers un changement d’attitude envers les animaux. Un mouvement puissant pour la défense des animaux a vu le jour, et ça a fait une différence pour des milliards d’animaux.
En 1971, lorsque quelques étudiants et moi avions mis en place un écran à Oxford pour montrer aux passants comment leurs œufs et leur veau sont produits, les gens nous demandaient si nous imaginions réellement que nous pourrions gagner face à la puissance politique et financière de l’industrie agroalimentaire. Mais le mouvement pour les animaux a remis en cause cette industrie avec succès, cette dernière ayant dû réaliser des réformes dans toute l’Union européenne qui exige désormais que les animaux d’élevage aient plus d’espace et de meilleures conditions de vie. Et des changements similaires sont intervenus de la même manière en Californie. Certes, ces changements sont encore loin de rendre la vie des animaux d’élevage décente, mais ils constituent une amélioration significative par rapport aux pratiques courantes avant les réformes.
Le nombre de personnes qui ont complètement arrêté de manger des animaux ou ont réduit leur consommation de viande pour des raisons éthiques est peut-être encore plus satisfaisant. Dans les années 1970, pour être végétarien il fallait être excentrique — pensée reflétée dans le nom de ce qui était alors le meilleur restaurant végétarien, Cranks ( = personnes excentriques). Si vous utilisiez le terme « vegan », vous obteniez invariablement un regard vide et vous deviez expliquer ce que cela signifiait.
Malgré tout cela, il est probablement vrai qu’il y ait plus d’animaux encore qui souffrent de la main des hommes qu’auparavant. C’est parce qu’il y a plus de gens riches dans le monde qu’auparavant, et le fait de satisfaire leur demande en viande signifie un vaste développement d’élevages industriels, plus particulièrement en Chine. Mais, le fait de voir dans cela une preuve que les défenseurs des animaux n’ont pas fait de progrès reviendrait à dire que, parce qu’il y a plus d’esclaves dans le monde aujourd’hui qu’en 1800, le mouvement anti-esclavagiste n’a pas fait de progrès. Avec une population mondiale qui a été multipliée par sept depuis 1800, les nombres ne nous expliquent pas l’histoire intégralement.

Waste water full of excrement and urine is being dumped into the ecosystems of North Carolina, causing untold environmental damage and putting human health at risk, yet the local government seems completely uninterested in investigating the situation.
Researchers found that nearly a quarter of water samples tested in the region contained unsafe amounts of E.coli and fecal bacteria, a direct result of the waste from huge scale factory farms.
North Carolina produces more than 4 billion pounds of pork per year, making it the second largest pork producer in the U.S., after Iowa. In some regions, such as Duplin County, there are more pigs than humans, with farmers raising 2 million pigs each year in a region with a population of just 60,000.
Despite the huge concentration of pigs in this region, government laws classify huge factory farm operations with thousands of pigs as “non-discharge facilities,” meaning that they are not regulated on the amount of sewage waste they produce, nor where they dump it.
Inside the factory farms, the pig’s excrement and urine is washed out of the pens through holes in the floor, and piped in to huge open lakes on the property. As there is a constant need for more waste to be pumped out, water from the sewage lakes are sprayed onto the surrounding agricultural fields at a rate of hundreds of gallons per minute, and it eventually seeps through into the waterways. The water is also indiscriminately dispersed into the surrounding environment and people’s homes during the spraying process.
Shocking Pollution Statistics
From 2010 to 2011 a research team from the university of North Carolina and John Hopkins University conducted extensive testing in the waters of North Carolina, specifically testing the water upstream and downstream from fields near the state’s major factory farms. Due to the lax regulations on the treatment of waste from these farms, millions of tons of sewage water are ending up in the waterways, and the stats are from the study are extremely worrying.
Out of 187 samples from Duplin County, over 40 percent were found to have fecal coliform and animal fecal bacteria counts exceeding safe water guidelines set by state and federal authorities. Almost a quarter (23 percent) of the samples tested were found to contain unsafe amounts of the E.coli bacteria, and around two thirds (61 percent) contained excessive amounts of Enterococcus.
Why Would the Authorities Ignore the Issue?
With such alarming readings being found in the county’s natural water systems, you might expect the government to be jumping into action to prevent the environmental and public health disaster from becoming any worse, but instead, they have done almost nothing about it.
Drew Elliot from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources said that the study “seems to be inconclusive.” His statement also claimed that, “The information presented provides an indication of overall water quality in these [waters]; however, it is not an indication of a discharge of waste.” When questioned on the issue further, the response was that it was difficult to determine the source of the contamination as fecal pollution could include “any warm blooded animals and failing septic or sewage collection systems.”
It seems as if the large scale farming operations who are clearly responsible for this dangerous water pollution are being given a free pass from the authorities, who are refusing to accept the evidence presented to them by scientific researchers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California filed an appeal Wednesday of a federal judge's ruling that blocked the state's ban on the sale of foie gras — a delicacy that gourmets consider heaven and animal rights groups call hell.
Attorney General Kamala D. Harris gave notice that she will appeal last month's ruling, which barred California from enforcing its ban on selling fatty goose or duck liver produced out of state. The ban took effect in 2012.
A Hermosa Beach restaurant called Hot's Kitchen, and foie gras producers in New York and Canada challenged the ban. The judge ruled state law doesn't trump federal poultry regulations.
It remains illegal for California farmers to force-feed birds, which is how the delicacy is made.
The restaurant and foie gras producers said they are confident the ruling will be upheld.
"The decision was based on the simple fact that, in the field of meat and poultry, federal law is supreme. California does not have the right to ban wholesome, USDA-approved poultry products, whether it's foie gras or fried chicken," said a statement released by attorney Michael Tenenbaum.
Animal rights groups had called on Harris to appeal and applauded the decision.
"In a civilized society, it is our moral obligation to protect all animals, including ducks and other farmed animals, from needless cruelty and violence," said a statement from Nathan Runkle, founder of the group Mercy for Animals.
"The people of California clearly have the right to prohibit the sale of a product that is the result of abject animal abuse" Runkle said.

At least six separate studies conducted by the same people that are still pushing the flu shot have confirmed that seasonal flu shots make people more prone to contracting the flu. The evidence is now overwhelming that, rather than impart immunity as long claimed, flu shots actually destroy the immune system and increase the risk of infection.
One would think that, now that the cat is out of the bag, these peddlers of quackery would quit while they’re ahead, admit that they lied about flu shot safety and efficacy, and go out and find a real profession. Instead, they’re continuing to push the seasonal flu shot, which as they now put it causes “interference” with people’s immune systems, as they hype the soon unveiling of a “universal” flu shot that will be better than ever (fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, well, you know the rest).

Depuis deux ans — hormis dans la viticulture —, les revenus des agriculteurs ont baissé en moyenne de 25 %. 2015 marque la disparition des quotas laitiers, instaurés il y a quarante ans. Il va falloir s’adapter, Les pays d’Europe du Nord se lancent dans l’élevage à grande échelle. Des fermes qui comptent jusqu’à 3 000 vaches, quand le cheptel moyen, en France, est de 60 têtes. La Confédération paysanne veut préserver ce modèle d’élevage familial.
L’agriculture française perd du terrain par rapport à ses voisines européennes, notamment l’allemande, dans le porc et la volaille. Xavier Beulin, patron de la puissante FNSEA, syndicat majoritaire, veut remettre la France sur le podium. Son combat : les normes administratives. En plus des oukases de Bruxelles, la France en rajoute avec une réglementation délirante qui l’éloigne des standards européens.
La naissance d’un veau doit être déclarée sous 7 jours, sous peine d’amende. Pour entretenir un fossé, l’agriculteur doit obtenir l’accord de la police de l’eau. Les contrôles sont faits par des gens armés. Un éleveur a été condamné à une amende de 170 000 euros pour avoir taillé une haie. Chaque année, plus de 150 agriculteurs se suicident.
Il y avait 1 million d’exploitations il y a vingt ans. Il en reste aujourd’hui 450 000. D’où une perte d’influence politique. Les agriculteurs ne sont plus cette armée impérialiste qui faisait trembler les ministres. La proportion de maires ruraux d’origine agricole est passée de 36 à 9 % en deux mandatures. Ils sont aussi moins nombreux au Sénat et à l’Assemblée nationale. Ils ont perdu leurs repères. Attention, danger !

Depuis deux ans — hormis dans la viticulture —, les revenus des agriculteurs ont baissé en moyenne de 25 %. 2015 marque la disparition des quotas laitiers, instaurés il y a quarante ans. Il va falloir s’adapter, Les pays d’Europe du Nord se lancent dans l’élevage à grande échelle. Des fermes qui comptent jusqu’à 3 000 vaches, quand le cheptel moyen, en France, est de 60 têtes. La Confédération paysanne veut préserver ce modèle d’élevage familial.
L’agriculture française perd du terrain par rapport à ses voisines européennes, notamment l’allemande, dans le porc et la volaille. Xavier Beulin, patron de la puissante FNSEA, syndicat majoritaire, veut remettre la France sur le podium. Son combat : les normes administratives. En plus des oukases de Bruxelles, la France en rajoute avec une réglementation délirante qui l’éloigne des standards européens.
La naissance d’un veau doit être déclarée sous 7 jours, sous peine d’amende. Pour entretenir un fossé, l’agriculteur doit obtenir l’accord de la police de l’eau. Les contrôles sont faits par des gens armés. Un éleveur a été condamné à une amende de 170 000 euros pour avoir taillé une haie. Chaque année, plus de 150 agriculteurs se suicident.
Il y avait 1 million d’exploitations il y a vingt ans. Il en reste aujourd’hui 450 000. D’où une perte d’influence politique. Les agriculteurs ne sont plus cette armée impérialiste qui faisait trembler les ministres. La proportion de maires ruraux d’origine agricole est passée de 36 à 9 % en deux mandatures. Ils sont aussi moins nombreux au Sénat et à l’Assemblée nationale. Ils ont perdu leurs repères. Attention, danger !

Koalas are having a rough go of it lately. Between dehydration from Australia’s historic drought and singed paws thanks to recent brushfires, extreme weather has given the furry marsupials more than enough to deal with.
Now another threat has emerged: the Australian government.
On Wednesday, an official confirmed that between 2013 and 2014, the government secretly euthanized 686 koalas in Australia’s Cape Otway National Park because the local population had grown bigger than the park could sustain.
"The intervention was necessary to prevent suffering of koalas because they weren't able to find enough food," said Lisa Neville, environment minister for the state of Victoria, in a statement.
The koalas had stripped the area's eucalyptus trees bare, according to the government.
"The whole of the cape smelled of dead koalas. It smelled like death," Frank Fotinas, manager of a campsite near the park, told the Australian Broadcasting Company.
Conservationists questioned the government's justification for the cull.
"If this science, guised as a cull, was so important, why was it done in secret?" Australian Koala Foundation director Deborah Tabart wrote on the group's Facebook page. "Koala numbers at Cape Otway are a result of gross mismanagement. The Australian government should hang its head in shame."
Neville said that she would be revisiting the overpopulation issues that led to the cull, which had been ordered by officials in an earlier political administration.
"It is clear that we have had koalas suffer in that Cape Otway area because of ill health and starvation," Neville said in a statement. "That's just not good enough, and that's a terrible way to treat koalas."
Despite the mass euthanization, the possibility of a future cull lingers. Cape Otway's koala population is still on the rise, and experts warn against moving koalas to other areas, as it often leads to greater suffering for the animals.

Traumatisée par le souvenir de ses veaux précédents, emmenés par un fermier, une ancienne vache laitière a décidé de cacher son veau nouveau-né pour qu’il ne lui soit pas enlevé, lui aussi.
Fin novembre, Clarabelle a été sauvée d’une exploitation laitière par Edgar’s Mission, une organisation de protection animalière australienne. Elle était sur le point d’être abattue, car elle ne produisait plus assez de lait pour justifier sa survie. Lorsque Clarabelle est arrivée au refuge, les bénévoles se sont aperçus qu’elle attendait un petit.
Une semaine avant sa mise bas, les bénévoles ont remarqué que Clarabelle agissait bizarrement, restant à distance et réagissant nerveusement plutôt que de s’alimenter. Après des recherches plus poussées, ils ont réalisé que la vache avait donné naissance à un veau, qu’elle avait dissimulé dans la végétation voisine.
Les vaches sont réputées pour leur instinct maternel prononcé. Lorsqu’elle était vétérinaire spécialisée, le Dr. Holly Cheever avait ainsi assisté aux agissements d’une vache enceinte qui, sachant que le fermier allait prendre son petit dès sa naissance, avait mis bas et caché l’un des deux veaux nouveau-nés, avant de présenter l’autre au fermier.
Le second avait été dissimulé dans les pâturages, jusqu’à ce que le fermier s’aperçoive de la production laitière réduite de la vache, qu’il retrouve le veau supplémentaire, et le lui retire.
