Please share the footage and above article far and wide - this is something that everyone needs to see!

Owned by Rivalea, the Corowa Abattoir in NSW kills up to one million pigs per year, using carbon dioxide gas (CO2) to render the pigs unconscious before their throats are slit. The piggery on the same property is the largest piggery in the southern hemisphere. The slaughterhouse and piggery have a constant security patrol and round-the-clock monitoring of security cameras in order to keep their practices hidden from the Australian public.

In a world-first, hidden cameras were placed inside the gas chamber in early 2014, revealing the suffering of every pig who goes through that system, screaming and thrashing for air as they are suffocated. At the entrance to the chamber, an employee leans over the terrified pigs, jabbing them repeatedly with an electric prodder to get them into the chamber. The pigs, who can hear the screams of those already in the chamber, often try to jump out over the walls; they do not want to go inside. In one instance, the employee holds the electric prodder in a pig's ear for 12 seconds for refusing to enter the chamber; in another, a lame pig is unable to walk to the chamber, so the employee jumps in and kicks him in the face before tossing him aside where he is trampled for over ten minutes by other pigs, before finally being forced into the chamber.

The video was sent to one of the world's foremost experts on pig behaviour and physiology, Professor Donald Broom at the University of Cambridge, who produced a scathing report (www.aussiepigs.com/documents/Pig%20slaughter%20video%20Broom.pdf) on the practices uncovered by the footage. This report and the footage have been handed to NSW Police by Chris Delforce, Operations Director of Aussie Farms, who expects charges to be laid against the owner of the abattoir, Rivalea.

However, it is important to note that this facility is not a "one-off". These gas chambers have been installed in roughly 15 Australian slaughterhouses including all of the largest, and hundreds of slaughterhouses all over the world (see the list here: www.aussiepigs.com/documents/Gas%20chamber%20installations%20in%20Aus%20pig%20abattoirs.pdf). The vast majority of pigs in Australia are killed in this way.

"This is the largest pig slaughterhouse in the country. Nobody can say this is a rogue operator, and how many more instances like this do we need to find before we start to accept that there is something systemically and inherently wrong with the way we treat animals raised for consumption in this country?" asks Mr Delforce. "The excessive use of the electric prod, or the kicking of the animals, isn’t, I’d say, the most disturbing thing about this footage. Instead it’s the systematic, mechanised, impersonal nature of it – these intelligent animals, some of them from so-called 'free range' systems, are being treated as nothing more than units of production."

"Carbon dioxide gassing has been touted by the industry and RSPCA as the most humane method of slaughtering pigs. After seeing this footage I think it’s fair to say that there is *no* humane method of slaughtering pigs. People are being lied to, and it’s time the truth, which for so long has been so well-hidden, to finally come out. If most people knew that this is what was going on, they would never support it.”
