As you may know, in 2013 a whistleblower captured video footage of terrified mother pigs' final moments inside Southern Quality Meats, Inc. (SQM), a Pontotoc, Miss., slaughterhouse. PETA has just learned that SQM is closing in June!

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) had awarded contracts worth more than $6 million in taxpayer funds to SQM to supply sausage to Mississippi schools. PETA has learned from an Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) official that ALSDE also funneled taxpayer dollars into SQM to supply sausage to Alabama schools.

Will you please speak up for pigs—and other animals slaughtered for their flesh—and urge MDE's State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carey Wright and ALSDE's June Barrett, program coordinator for child nutrition programs, to pledge never again to buy meat from any slaughterhouse known to have broken any animal protection laws?

The footage shows one SQM worker jabbing pigs with prongs and even putting the prongs on one apparently stunned mother pig's lower abdomen and/or genitals. Even then-SQM President B. Don Haynie Sr. admitted that the video showed "improper stunning techniques" and at least "two instances in which [a pig] was not rendered unconscious on the first stun."

Following PETA's complaint, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigated and confirmed illegal mistreatment of pigs who were not immediately rendered unconscious by the first application of the electric wand and that SQM had failed "to properly train [its] employees in effective humane handling." FSIS records released in October 2013 show that SQM had known of its animal-handling problems for months.

Please take a moment today to urge Dr. Wright and Ms. Barrett to pledge never again to contract with any slaughterhouse known to have broken any animal protection laws by calling Dr. Wright at 601-359-3513 or Ms. Barrett at 334-242-9700 or e-mailing them.

Thank you for your compassion for animals and for your willingness to take action.

Sincerely,
