shocking new undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals Canada reveals baby chicks thrown, dropped, drowned, and ground up alive at a Maple Leaf Foods hatchery in Ontario.
An undercover investigator with Mercy For Animals Canada worked at a hatchery in Hanover, Ontario, and documented a culture of cruelty, including:

• Chicks flung by their fragile wings and slammed into metal dividers
• Live chicks sent through a hot washing machine to be scalded alive and drowned
• Chicks roughly shoved into overloaded maceration machines and ground up alive
• Sick and injured animals deprived of proper veterinary care being discarded like trash

These sensitive young birds suffer extreme pain as they are thrown, scalded, and ground up by macerator blades. The chicks are fully capable of feeling pain and stress, and deserve protection from abuse.
Mercy For Animals Canada is calling upon Maple Leaf Foods to implement and enforce meaningful animal welfare policies at all of its hatcheries, to create a zero-tolerance policy for scalding live birds, and to install video monitoring systems, live-streamed to the internet, in all facilities to help prevent abuse.
