A Japanese rancher inside the Fukushima evacuation zone has returned to his abandoned ranch.
According to an article recently published by "The New York Times," Masami Yoshizawa "has no neighbors, but plenty of company: hundreds of abandoned cows he has vowed to protect from the government's kill order."
The piece details this rancher's protest against what he considers the Japanese government's attempt to keep the longstanding consequences of the Fukushima incident out of the public eye.
Renaming the land that has been in his family for generations the Ranch of Hope, Yoshizawa has created a safe haven for his and his former neighbors' abandoned, radioactive cows, who were left to starve to death after the Fukushima disaster.
The article further states that Yoshizawa "believes the cows on his ranch, abandoned by him and other fleeing farmers after the accident, are as much victims as the 83,000 humans forced to abandon their homes and live outside the evacuation zone for two and a half years."
